How it works

WhatsApp safety alerts, without the surveillance.

Nightlight links to your child's WhatsApp or Telegram account, watches for genuine safety risks, and alerts you only when something is wrong. You never get to browse their conversations.

1. Link once, transparently

You scan a QR code on your child's phone for WhatsApp — the same way WhatsApp Web links — or connect Telegram through its official API. Their WhatsApp or Telegram settings show Nightlight as a linked device or connected service. They can see it's there and they can remove it. That transparency is the point.

2. Watch passively

Once linked, Nightlight observes incoming and outgoing WhatsApp or Telegram text in real time. It starts watching from the moment you set it up and does not read past history.

3. Classify for real risk

Messages are analysed for patterns associated with grooming, sexual content directed at the child, self-harm, meeting requests, bullying, secrecy pressure, substances, and stranger contact. Ordinary teenage conversation — sarcasm, peer banter, romantic curiosity — is intentionally left alone.

4. Alert only when needed

If the classifier finds a genuine risk, Nightlight sends you an alert. For critical alerts, it includes the triggering message and a small amount of surrounding context — never more than five messages — so you can judge and act proportionately. For lower-severity signals, you get a weekly digest with no message text.

5. No transcript, no browsing

Nightlight does not store a message archive and does not give you an inbox to read. The only message text you ever see is the evidence attached to a critical alert. Everything else is analysed and discarded.

The two things Nightlight must be able to say truthfully

  • Works on iPhone and Android for WhatsApp — Telegram too. Nothing gets installed on your child's phone.
  • You don't get to read their conversations. You get told when something's wrong — and shown exactly what triggered it.
